Background of the Study

Food insecurity is a major challenge in many developing regions, including Taraba State, where limited access to nutritious food is a significant issue, especially in urban areas. Urban farming has been proposed as a potential solution to alleviate food insecurity, providing fresh produce to urban residents while also creating opportunities for income generation. In Taraba State, urban farming can offer a sustainable way to combat food shortages and improve nutrition. This study explores the role of urban farming in addressing food insecurity, examining the impact of small-scale urban agriculture on food availability, access, and affordability in Taraba State.

Statement of the Problem

Food insecurity continues to affect many urban residents in Taraba State, particularly due to limited agricultural production and poor access to markets. Urban farming has been introduced in some areas as a response to this problem, yet its effectiveness and potential for widespread adoption remain underexplored. This study aims to assess the role of urban farming in alleviating food insecurity in Taraba State, focusing on its contributions to food availability and the nutritional well-being of the population.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the contribution of urban farming to food security in Taraba State.
  2. To examine the impact of urban farming on food availability, affordability, and access in urban areas of Taraba State.
  3. To explore the challenges faced by urban farmers and provide recommendations for improving urban farming practices in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. How does urban farming contribute to food security in Taraba State?
  2. What is the impact of urban farming on the availability and affordability of nutritious food in Taraba State?
  3. What challenges do urban farmers face in Taraba State, and how can these be overcome to enhance food security?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Urban farming significantly contributes to food security in Taraba State.
  2. Urban farming improves the availability and affordability of nutritious food in urban areas of Taraba State.
  3. Challenges such as inadequate resources, lack of technical skills, and land scarcity limit the effectiveness of urban farming in addressing food insecurity in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on urban farming practices in selected urban areas of Taraba State. Limitations may include access to private farming locations, lack of reliable data on production yields, and biases in farmers' self-reported information.

Definitions of Terms

  • Urban Farming: The practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food within urban areas to enhance local food security.
  • Food Insecurity: The lack of consistent access to sufficient and nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.
  • Small-Scale Agriculture: Agricultural practices involving small land areas, often for subsistence or local market consumption, as opposed to large-scale commercial farming.
